“The Insight of Kenjiro Okazaki – Abstract Art as Impact —How Abstract Arts Can Become Concrete Tools,” curated by Kenjiro Okazaki, will be opening at Toyota Municipal Museum of Art (Aichi Prefecture) on Saturday, April 22nd, 2017. Aside from his active career as an artist, Okazaki has introduced innovative views on artworks and art history based on his broad knowledge of culture and art. He will examine the primal intentions of Abstract Art in this exhibition through exploring the art collection built by Toyota Municipal Museum of Art since its opening in 1995.

Masaru Iwai:The Catalog “Prisoner of Habit” Has Been Published and Available Online

The catalog documenting Maseru Iwai’s series of projects Prisoner of Habit conducted at AKIBI plus (Akita, Japan) in 2015 and 2016 has been published and is available online.

At the artist-in-residence program and exhibition “Prisoner of habit: dance, eat, defecate” in 2015, Iwai depicted one of the provincial cities after the war through researching issues on spring water and Bon festival dance mainly in Shinya area, Akita. He created opportunities for the local to communicate with each other by opening the vacant house, where he stayed, to the public and working together with them on the project. As for “Making an Exhibition, Prisoner of Habit with Masaru Iwai” in 2016, he visualized the form of the changing provincial city through researching homemade videos recorded in 8mm films and VHS, which are now replaced by the internet and other newer media.

This catalog includes essays by Eriko Kimura, curator at Yokohama Museum of Art, and Ayako Osanai, independent curator/coordinator.
 
Those two projects were conducted as collaborative projects with the local and students who were interested in art/artist management. AKIBI plus, the organizer of the projects, is a human resource development program for art management, where the faculty of Akita University of Art conducts projects in collaboration with four areas in Akita Prefecture.

    Enrico Isamu Ōyama: "Writing and Picturing in Post-1945 Asian Art" University of Chicago

    Enrico Isamu Ōyama will be performing at the international symposium “Writing and Picturing in Post-1945 Asian Art,” conducted for three days from Friday, April 21 to Sunday, April 23 at Department of Art History and Logan Center for the Arts at the University of Chicago. (Ōyama will perform on Day 2, April 22)
     
    At this symposium, researchers and curators, who specialize in East Asian calligraphy and ink painting, will have presentations and talk sessions on the history of calligraphy and ink painting. Artists who use elements of calligraphy and ink painting in their creative activities will also perform on the stage.

        Masaru Iwai: Reborn-Art Festival 2017′s 1st Talk “Oshika Peninsula in Earth History”

        The preparation for Reborn-Art Festival 2017 to be held in the summer of 2017 on the streets of Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture and Oshika Peninsula is in progress. Watari-um Museum is conducting the very first trial curation for the Art department in Japan.

        Prior to the opening of the festival, Masaru Iwai together with other participating artists is going to participate in this first round of art talk series in conversation with Shinichi Nakazawa. Nakazawa is an anthropologist and one of the members of the production committee.
