Shuhei Ise | Chasing Me/You Gone By: Part 2
2 December - 20 January, 2024
Venue : Takuro Someya Contemporary Art
Takuro Someya Contemporary Art is pleased to announce Shuhei Ise’s upcoming solo exhibition Chasing Me/You Gone By: Part 2, opening on Saturday, December 2, 2023. This exhibition is Ise’s first solo exhibition at TSCA in roughly four years following Mere painting (2020) and is the second part of Chasing Me/You Gone By (2022), held at Colloquium, an artist-run space in the city of Sendai in which Ise is himself involved.
In this exhibition, Ise presents paintings with horizontal compositions, rarely seen in his previous work, as well as a reconfiguration of works from Group Show of Contemporary Artists 2023: Intersection of Paintings (Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum). Through these works, Ise, who says, “A work is complete once I am convinced that the cycle of images is unending,” reveals new developments in his practice. As the “field” through which to search for the grounds of this exhibition titled “Part 2,” these paintings make viewers aware of the active gaze latent within themselves.
Note
To self
A manifestation of the intimate self.
It is to find yourself hung out, neither the self you know well nor the self for others.
To create
If I/you don’t paint it, I/you don’t know, and if I/you don’t, it’s as if it doesn’t exist.
It must not be by chance. Looking back, I should know that I came in my footsteps.
The inactive brush. Brush that should have been and could have been, free from purpose.
To the state of fulfillment of the potential to develop.
To contemplation
Freedom to Image/Resistance to Image
It cannot die. It can be killed. Both player and viewer.
If I/you don’t see it, I/you don’t know, and if I/you don’t, it’s as if it doesn’t exist.
To something
Seeing or painting would be the liberation of an individual’s life.
Something that is not a decision. A detachment from the will. Set it as a playground, consciously.
It is collected while the senses are manifested, while the words are lost.

In each of these projects, a round table has been held to bring together the artists leading the initiative with other participants. These activities aim to create a space where participants can express their independence freely through the exchange of dialogue and have greatly impacted Ise’s own practice.
