TSCA is pleased to announce that its next exhibition Shunsuke Imai, Kenjiro Okazaki, Enrico Isamu Ōyama will open on May 9th, 2015 (Saturday). In this exhibition, we present to you each of the artist’s research, practice, ideas and experiences through “color” and “form”. We also hope that it will be an opportunity for each and every one of us to weave in the various elements of their works into a single timeline.

 

 

SHUNSUKE IMAI

Born in Fukui Prefecture in 1978. Currently resides in Tokyo. IMAI creates works of art based on reflections concerning the basic elements of painting, namely color, form, and space. With compositions of overlapping colorful stripes, he explores the possibilities of plane surfaces and the fundamental meaning of “seeing”. His major exhibits include “VOCA: The Vision of Contemporary Art 2015”, at The Ueno Royal Museum, (Tokyo, 2015), “the way of PAINTING” at the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery (Tokyo, 2014), the “8th Shiseido Art Egg Imai Shunsuke “range finder” at the Shiseido Gallery (Tokyo, 2014), “surface / volume” at the HAGIWARA PROJECTS (Tokyo, 2013) and LOOP HOLE (Tokyo, 2012) and “SSS ? expanded painting” at MISAKO & ROSEN (Tokyo, 2012).

KENJIRO OKAZAKI

Kenjiro Okazaki (b. 1955) is a Japanese visual artist whose works span over several genres, including painting, sculpture (which includes reliefs and constructions), as well as landscape design and architecture. Many of his works has been featured in public collections throughout Japan and in various exhibitions around the world. Since 1980′s, he has been selected for international exhibitions such as 12e Biennale de Paris, Musée d’Art Modern de la Ville de Paris(1982), The 9th Triennale of India, Lalit Kala Akademi (1997). In 2002, Okazaki was selected in the Venice Biennale as the director of the Japanese pavilion of the International Architecture Exhibition. His works include a collaborative performance I Love my Robots with the choreographer Trisha Brown, premiered in early 2007. Besides he has energetically directed the Yotsuya Art Studium, an innovative art school in central Tokyo, from 2001 to 2013. He received Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship at Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (HMSG) in 2014. Okazaki is also extremely active as a theoretician and critic, and is the author or co-author of several books, including Renaissance: Condition of Experience (Chikuma Shobo, 2001), featuring his analysis of Filippo Brunelleschi, Ready for Painting! (Asahi Press, 2005), a dialogue with the artist Hisao Matsuura, and Articulation of the Arts: technological analyses (FilmArt, 2007). He has also created picture books in collaboration with Japanese poets, including Little Lellolello with Kyong-Mi Park (Shogakukan Inc. 2004), and Popahpe Popipappu with Shuntaro Tanikawa (Crayon House, 2004).

ENRICO ISAMU ŌYAMA

Enrico Isamu Ōyama is a Japanese-Italian artist who is known for his signature style “Quick Turn Structure”. QTS is a black-and-white, minimal yet spontaneous motif that was developed from the visual language of graffiti culture. Ōyama lives and works in New York City, being active both as an artist and a critic linking contemporary art and street culture at multiple levels.
